When Life Feels Distant, God Is Still Our Refuge

There are moments in life that don’t hit in the way you expect.

Not overwhelming grief.
Not deep heartbreak.
Just… a quiet pause.

I recently found out someone I knew passed away. And I found out on TikTok.

We weren’t close anymore. But at one point, we were. And that’s what made it feel strange. Life moved on, we grew in different directions, and then suddenly… they were gone.

It didn’t leave me devastated.
But it did make me stop and think.

Life is really short.

Psalm 91:1–4 (NLT)

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

This I declare about the Lord:
He alone is my refuge, my place of safety;
He is my God, and I trust Him.

For He will rescue you from every trap
and protect you from deadly disease.

He will cover you with His feathers.
He will shelter you with His wings.
His faithful promises are your armor and protection.

Reading this reminded me that God is not only our refuge in the big, overwhelming moments… but also in the quiet ones.

The moments where nothing is necessarily “wrong,” but something feels off.
There are moments where life just reminds you how quickly things change.
The moments where you realize how much you’ve grown and how much time has passed.

Sometimes, “shelter” doesn’t look like being protected from pain.
Sometimes it looks like being held in awareness.

Held in reflection.
Held in truth.
Held in the understanding that life is fragile, but God is constant.

I think we often expect God to show up in loud, dramatic ways.
But sometimes, He meets us in stillness.

In a scroll.
In a memory.
A quiet realization shifts something within us.

And in those moments, He’s still covering us.

Still present.
Still our refuge.

If you’re in a season where things just feel… reflective,
where life is making you pause and think,
where you’re noticing how fast everything moves—

you’re not alone.

And more importantly, you’re not without covering.

A Simple Prayer

God,
Thank You for being our refuge in every kind of situation
not just the painful ones, but the quiet ones too.

Help us slow down, reflect, and recognize Your presence in every season.
Remind us that even as life changes, You remain the same.

Provide us peace in the moments we don’t fully understand.
And teach us to rest in You, always.

Amen.
